    Make your own chewing gum

One of the things I like doing best when I cook is making something that normally people buy. Sure, making the greatest Macaroni and Cheese is really cool, but making my own Chili Powder is being one step closer to godhood. Along those lines, I love the idea of the make your own gum kit. [...]

    Violet, you’re turning violet, Violet!

Biology at the beginning of the third millennium, the 21st century, the year 2006, is much like Physics was in the 1950s. We’ve recently uncovered the tools and built up the requisite knowledge to make huge strides in our ability to understand what happens with life, as well as our ability to control it. With [...]

    Table saw for vegetables

Such a bad idea, but how can one resist the allure of the kitchen-based power tools? It’s only an exhibition piece, and not something we could buy, but still.
If anyone decides they want to build one of these, you should feel proud of your upcoming sense of achievement. However, try to build in the [...]

    LEGO Chocolate Printer

Instructables has a great entry on a homemade 3D Chocolate Printer, made from LEGOs (with some custom work). Its very rough at the moment, and the maximum geometry is limited by the fact that there isn’t yet a way to work in support structures, but it’s a great start. There are some movies on the [...]

    Maillard Reaction Filk

This entry is extra-geeky, so be warned. I was playing with Google Books’ full-text search feature to find information on the Maillard Reaction, and I discovered that someone made a song about the Maillard Reaction. It’s sung to the tune of “On Top of Old Smokey.” It starts:
    “The sugar and protein /
    all reacted till brown [...]

    Dark Chocolate Dipped Altoids

I believe I’ve mentioned my affinity for mints in the Metromint story, so it should come as no surprise that I’d mention this. Make Magazine’s blog reports that Altoids are releasing a new set of ginger, cinnamon, and (of course) peppermint flavored candies, but this time dipped in dark chocolate. Curiously Strong Chocolates.
    Unfortunately, they won’t [...]

    First Interview

This past sunday, I enjoyed being interviewed for the first time, live on a local Public Radio station, WNRN. We chatted specialty diets, farm-raised salmon, whether foie gras should be banned, gluten, bread, coffee, tarte tatin, and who knows what else.

    Measuring Salinity

Here’s a great little project for creating a device that will measure the amount of salinity in any given liquid. This is in no way necessary for the home cook, but it should be very interesting for doing kitchen chemistry experiments, and it might be useful for creating new recipes. There’s also a link for [...]

    Inverted Indoor Gardening

Here’s a nice how-to on making a inverted indoor hanging pot for tomatoes and other vine vegetables. Looks cool, though not what I need for my stuff. I would like to get a nice inverted tomato pot (or five) for the outdoors, ’cause fresh tomatoes are so worth the effort. Well, the effort I put [...]
